Installing Red Hat Linux on your new SGI 230 box

  1. Turn on your machine and as soon as you see the startup screen press F12 to access the boot menu.
  2. Highlight CD-ROM and insert the Red Hat Installation CD on the CD-ROM tray. Press ENTER.
  3. When the machine reboots you will see the Red Hat Installation Menu. Choose the first option by pressing ENTER.
  4. You will now be prompted to choose the Installation Language . Click on English, then on Next.
  5. You will now be prompted to configure your keyboard. In the Model field choose Generic 101-key PC. In the Layout field choose U.S. English. In the Dead Keys field choose Enable dead keys. Click on Next.
  6. You will now be prompted to configure your mouse. Under the Generic field, choose 3 Button Mouse(PS/2). Click on Next.
  7. The next screen will display Red Hat System Installer. Simply click on Next.
  8. Now you will be prompted to select the Install Options. Choose Custom and click on Next.
  9. Now you have to partition your disk. Click on Add.

    a.) On the new window prompt, under the Mount Point field choose /boot. In the Size(Megs) field type 16. In the Partition Type field choose Linux Native and press Ok.

    b.) Now press Add again. On the new window prompt, leave the Mount Point field blank. In the Size(Megs) field type 128 (or the amount of RAM your box has). In the Partition Type field choose Linux Swap and press Ok.

    c.) Once again press Add. On the new window prompt, under the Mount Point field choose /. Leave the Size(Megs) field blank and click on Grow to fill disk. In the Partition Type field choose Linux Native and press Ok.

    You are now ready to proceed. If you made a mistake on one of the partitions, highlight the partition, click on Edit and make the appropriate changes. Otherwise, click on Next.

  10. You will now be prompted to format the partitions. Choose all of them and click on Next.
  11. You will now be prompted to configure LILO. Simply don't change anything.
  12. You will now be prompted to configure the network. Choose the Activate on boot option. In the IP Address field enter your IP Address (if you don't know it, ask around). In the Netmask field enter "255.255.255.0". The Network and Broadcast fields will be filled automatically. In the Hostname field enter the host name(if you don't know it, ask around). In the Gateway field enter "136.145.54.1". In the Primary DNS field enter "136.145.54.10". In the Secondary DNS field enter "136.145.54.11". Leave the Ternary DNS field blank, and press Next.
  13. Now you will be prompted to configure your time zone settings. Choose America/Puerto Rico and press Next.
  14. The next step will be the account configuration. In the Root Password field type in the root password(if you don't know ,ask). In the Confirm field, type it again and press Next.
  15. Now you will have to complete the Authentication Configuration. Choose Enable MD5 passwords and Enable shadow passwords and press Next.
  16. You will now be prompted to select the packages you wish to install. Choose all the packages you want to install and press Next.
  17. The next step will be the X Configuration. For the Monitor Configuration click SGI and select your monitor(depending on the size).Press Next.
  18. You will now be prompted to configure your video card. Choose Nvidia GeForce?. Then click on 16384, Customize X Configuration, and Use graphical login. Now press Test this configuration to make sure that your settings are OK. If everything works, press Next.
  19. You will now be prompted to choose your resolution. This depends on the kind of monitor you have. Once you've made your choice, press Test this configuration to make sure that it works fine. Then click on Next.

You are now ready to complete the installation. Press Next and wait until all the packages are installed. This may take a while. When the installation process finishes, you will have to reboot your machine. Once you reboot, log in as root and configure your box for NFS and NIS.
