Stardust by Neil Gaiman
Stardust, a fairy tail for adults, written by Neil Gaiman. It reads like a fairy tale, except for the parts that don't. Gaiman is twisted, and it shows.
The village of Wall is next to a wall that separates our world from Faery. There's a fairy market every nine years, and strange things happen then. One night, a star falls into the land beyond the wall, and a girl from the village promises a boy his heart's desire if he can retreive the star for her.
The young man sets out to retreive it, and we follow his journey. The story is simple, but the plot twists and turns in surprising ways. The best part of the novel is the feel, which is mostly like a fairy tale, part Tanith Lee, and parts Gaiman, which makes for a great mix.
