About Plone

This welcome page is used to introduce you to the Plone Content Management System.

Plone is a content management system that allows you to create and publish content on a web site using a browser or other simple text tools.

It controls access to the site, and manages workflow of documents, from authors to reviewers, to publication.

The underlying components of the system are documented:

But the most usefull sources of information for me have been:

  • The Plone Book describes plone from a user perspective in great detail. The chapter on Structured Text is great, stx means you don't need to learn HTML to write web pages.
  • The Plone How-to section describes various aspects of customizing and administration of plone, and gives tips for users.
  • The Plone mailing lists allow you to ask other plone users for help (be sure to search for answers before posting).

You can participate by clicking on the join link above, then entering your folder. Create folders and put content in those folders. It's a very simple and powerful system. The "name" field becomes the relative url of the content, the "Title" and "Description" fields are used when creating references to the content from other pages. Published folders are visible in the "navigation" toolbox. I recommend using reasonable titles for folders and documents. News items and events can be created with the name field left blank, plone will generate a random name like News-2003-07-07.2349.

After you write something click on the properties tabs and select some keywords that describe it. Then click on the state tab and submit the document for publication. Published documents and folders are visible to all users that visit the site.

Please contribute your experiences at the Plone website
