The High Performance Computing facility of the University of Puerto Rico System (HPCf) started operations in September of 1999 with the installation of a Silicon Graphics Origin system, replacing the UPR's previous supercomputer, an Intel Paragon.
It was quickly realized that to offer a high performance computing environment, it was critical to ensure adequate connectivity to the facility. Thus, early on the HPCf got involved in developing the Internet2 project for Puerto Rico.
The HPCf is presently located on the grounds of the Botanical Gardens North of the UPR, a few minutes drive away from both the Rio Piedras and Medical Sciences campuses.
Various projects are concurrently administrered by the High Performance Computing facility. The following presents an overview of these projects.
